The community of economists mourns the loss of Professor Alberto Alesina, Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, who passed away on May 23rd, 2020.

He was one of the co-founders of the field of new political economy, the study of political incentives and their effect on economic outcomes, as well as how economic conditions and policies affect political behaviour.

His contributions in the field that he helped establish were pathbreaking and multifaceted. Economics is much poorer without him.
